How many weeks before I get my new puppy should I get my tattoo?
I already have one and I understand animals shouldn't be near it, being that it is basically an opened wound. So how many weeks do you think I should get the ink before the new puppy comes along?
Actually, it's really only an open wound for a couple of days after the tattoo (sometimes longer, especially with slower healing areas like extremities). The skins will seal off pretty quickly. *However*, this isn't the same thing as saying the skin will act with it's normal strength and elasticity. The area will be sensitive and more prone to breaks, say from a playful dog, for at least a week and really two or more.
Two weeks tends to be when people consider a tattoo fully healed, even though there still might be some residual scabs and the tattoo hasn't settled completely into the skin. Subdermally, the skin hasn't gone through a complete regeneration, a process that takes 1-3 months, but this will not affect your question.
Long & short - wait two weeks, 3-4 if it's on or below the wrist, ankle or you're a slow healer. A good sign is that if there are still skin bits hanging off the tattoo, you're not done waiting.
