We commemorate MLKing's birthday because he stood up against prejudice and injustice in our country. It is good to be reminded of the American idea he fought and died for, as put forth by Thomas Jefferson:
"We hold these truths to be self evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness."
Or, as Dr.King said: "I have a dream that my four children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character."
For those who think that prejudice and racism is a thing of the past, simply ask someone who might be on the receiving end of it and see what they say.
There were those (Sen. Jesse Helms, et. al.) who argued against MLKing Day, saying that he associated with Communists among other things. They had a right to their opinions, but were a small minority. It is important to remember that during the Civil Rights movement, Dr. King was criticized by more radical activists for his Christian Faith, and his unwavering commitment to non-violence.
Martin Luther King Jr.'s Birthday is an important Holiday because it reminds us that all men and women are created equal and that we need to end predjudice and injustice in our lives, and in the world, as best we can.
