Is it appropriate to send out pre-wedding announcements rather than invitations?
There are a lot of family members on my fiance's side that will not be able to make the trip for the wedding, but his mom said they would send a gift if they are notified it's happening, so he wants to send them notices of our marriage with the invitations, and then another set of them after we are married! I think it's better to just send the announcement once we are married, not before with the invitations.
If there is a long wait between the engagement and the wedding, many couples send out an announcement stating that they are engaged. Usually this happens, if there is at least a year's wait before the actual wedding date. It's perfectly appropriate to send out an engagement announcement.
However, it is completely INAPPROPRIATE to expect or ask for gifts from people who will not attend the wedding or even receive a wedding invitation. You should only expect gifts from people to whom you send a wedding invitation and who actually attend the wedding.
You can of course send out a wedding announcement once you've been married.
